Safety
As with most procedures, the results depend on the skill of the person performing your treatment. Dermaplaning especially is very delicate, as it involves the use of a surgical scalpel that is normally used for invasive surgeries and incisions. These tools are much more sharp compared to traditional razors, and requires an experienced hand to prevent accidental nicks, scratches, or other forms of pain. Additionally, bad form can result in a patchy appearance or ingrown hairs instead of a smooth, even glow.
Even though there are many at-home and OTC dermaplaning kits available, it is not recommended to use these. There are numerous reports of patients using an at-home kit only to get scratched up skin due to bad technique, poor blade quality, or both. The blades of at-home kits are machine cut, which are more blunt and less gentle than the surgical instruments that have been precisely shaped by lasers. While dermaplaning can improve scarring, low quality tools can actually cause even more scarring. Proper medical grade tools easily remove hair and dead skin without irritating the follicle, snagging the root, or cutting the skin.
In addition, at home kits do not effectively remove the layers of dead skin that dermaplaning does, which is one of the key goals of the procedure. The results from these at home kits are simply not as effective as a professionally done treatment, and end up being a waste of money in the long run. When it comes to your skin, settling for the cheaper option can do more harm than good.
